Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' sparks a record-breaking phenomenon

The genre-bending country-rap smash became the longest-running number one in US chart history amid debate over genre.

An unknown artist named Lil Nas X ignited one of the most remarkable chart phenomena in history this year with "Old Town Road," a genre-bending country-rap song that went viral, broke records and sparked a national conversation about genre, race and the gatekeeping of music.

The track, which paired twangy country instrumentation with trap beats and hip-hop delivery, exploded in popularity after spreading on social media. But it also became controversial when it was removed from a country music chart on the grounds that it did not embrace enough elements of the genre, a decision many saw as reflecting deeper issues about who gets to make country music.

The controversy only fuelled the song's rise. A remix featuring a country star added fuel, and the track went on to spend a record-shattering number of weeks at the top of the main US singles chart, becoming the longest-running number one in the chart's history.

Lil Nas X, a charismatic and internet-savvy young artist, rode the wave with humour and flair, and soon came out publicly, becoming a prominent and unapologetic figure in pop.

The saga captured the power of the internet and social media to upend the traditional music industry, launching an unknown artist to the top of the charts, and it exposed enduring tensions over genre boundaries. "Old Town Road" became a cultural landmark, and the launchpad for one of pop's most inventive and boundary-pushing new stars.
